Nairobi hotels and where to stay
Nairobi National Park is on the southern edge of a capital city, so most places to sleep are in the city and its suburbs. When a listing says near the park, ask which gate it means. A hotel in the center, in Westlands or in Karen can all be called near, yet each one starts the day at a different place.
This page compares areas instead of naming hotels. It tells you what lies close to each area, what to ask before you book and which safety notes to read. If you have not chosen your activities yet, start with the Nairobi tours and the Nairobi National Park game drives, then pick the area that fits them.

Where to stay near Nairobi National Park
Four areas, compared by what is close.
| Area | What is close | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lang'ata | The approach to the Main Gate on Lang'ata Road, and the Giraffe Centre | Early game drives and the park attractions | Ask the property for the route to your gate and allow for traffic |
| Karen | The Karen Blixen Museum and the new site of the former park camp | A quieter base with museum and garden stops | Not automatically close to the Main Gate |
| Museum Hill | The National Museum and Snake Park, closer to the city center | City days, museums and a short stay at the start or end of a trip | Park gates are a separate ride |
| City center and Westlands | Restaurants, offices and the main roads | Business trips and short stays with many options | Read the safety notes below and ask which gate is the plan |
For most visitors whose main plan is a game drive, a base on the Lang'ata side makes sense, because the Main Gate is on Lang'ata Road. For museums and a city weekend, Museum Hill or the center fit better. These are guides to area, not promises about drive time, so ask your host for a realistic transfer time at the hour you plan to leave.

What near the park really means
Three things to check before you book.
Near is not inside
A hotel marketed as near Nairobi National Park may be in the city center. Some lists of places near the park include central city hotels, so check the address on a map and ask which gate it is closest to.
The former park camp has moved
The tented camp that used to stand inside the park now operates at a new site in Karen forest, reopened in 2025. It sits in Karen, not within the park boundary, so check the address of any tented camp listing that says it is in the park.
A neighboring hotel is not a ticket
A hotel next to the Giraffe Centre is a separate booking from the visit itself. Staying there does not replace the entry ticket for the Giraffe Centre, and a hotel booking is not a requirement for the visit.
Ask about your gate
The Main Gate, the East Gate and the gate for the elephant orphanage are different places. See getting there for the gates.
Nairobi hotel questions to ask your host
A short list that saves time.
Which gate is closest?
Ask for a gate name, not just near the park. The answer tells you how your morning will start.
Can you arrange an early pick-up?
The park opens at 06:00. If you want a game drive at opening, ask whether the property can arrange a ride at that time.
What is the transfer plan for the airport?
Ask who picks you up and where. The routes are covered on the page about getting to the national park.
What does the rate include?
Hotel prices change by season and by date, so compare what each rate includes, including cancellation terms, before you decide.
Safety notes for choosing an area
Calm and practical.
Motorbike robberies
The German Foreign Office warns of robberies from motorbikes in Nairobi, including by day, in areas such as Westlands, Riverside, Gigiri and Runda. Do not assume any area is safe in every case.
Use arranged transport
Ask the property to arrange transport for arrivals and early starts, and keep valuables out of sight, particularly in traffic.
Read current advice
Check the advice of your own government before you book. The US State Department and the UK Foreign Office also publish advice on Nairobi. Details are on the getting there page.

Nairobi hotels: frequently asked questions
Are there hotels inside Nairobi National Park?
Most places to stay are in the city and its suburbs. The tented camp that used to stand in the park now operates in Karen forest, so check the address of any listing that says it is in the park.
Which area suits a game drive?
For most visitors, the Lang'ata side, because the approach to the Main Gate is on that road. Karen and Museum Hill also work, but ask for a realistic transfer time.
Where should I stay for the museums?
Museum Hill is the closest area to the National Museum and Snake Park. The Karen Blixen Museum is in Karen.
Is Westlands a good base?
It has many options, but it is one of the areas named in German advice on motorbike robberies in Nairobi, including by day. Arrange transport and read the current advice.
Can I stay at the Giraffe Centre?
A hotel next to the Giraffe Centre is a separate booking. A stay there does not replace the entry ticket, and the visit does not require a hotel booking.
Is this an official hotel booking site?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by a hotel, the Kenya Wildlife Service or any operator, and it does not take hotel bookings.
